Individual Volunteers

Donation Center opportunities are limited to volunteers 14 years of age or older. Due to COVID-19, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian - who also must sign up for the same shift.

Saturday Morning Drop-Off

Every Saturday, we accept donations of furniture and household goods at our loading dock. Volunteers help with every aspect of receiving donations, from unloading to cleaning to organizing them into our showroom. Check out the many positions we have for this shift below.

  • Greeter

    As vehicles arrive for drop-off, an experienced volunteer:


    • Confirms appointments
    • Hands out tax receipts if requested
    • Directs vehicles to an open loading bay

    Requirements:


    • At least 18 years old
    • Volunteered at our loading dock in the past year
  • Furniture Movers

    As vehicles pull up to the loading dock for drop-off, volunteers:

      • Inspect donations to determine if they meet our guidelines
      • Unload heavier furniture from vehicles and onto dollies/carts
      • Bring processed furniture and household goods upstairs on dollies/carts and unload into areas indicated by the Elevator Operator/Inventory Team Leader
      • Load any virtual furniture bank orders onto client trucks/U-Haul vehicles

    Requirements:


      • At least 14 years old
      • If under 18 years old, must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian - who also must sign up for the same shift
      • Ability to comfortably lift at least 50lbs
  • Furniture Processors

    As vehicles pull up to the loading dock, volunteers:


    • Inspect donations to determine if they meet our guidelines
    • Unload lightweight furniture and household goods from vehicles and onto dollies/carts
    • Clean, inventory, and label the date on furniture before it's taken upstairs

    Requirements:


    • At least 14 years old
    • If under 18 years old, must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian - who also must sign up for the same shift
  • Inventory Team Leader/Elevator Operator

    As donations are dropped off, an experienced volunteer:


    • Operates the elevator when Furniture Movers are ready to bring carts/dollies upstairs or downstairs
    • Directs Furniture Movers where to place furniture in the warehouse (e.g. sorting, showroom, repair/paint)

    Requirements:


    • At least 18 years old
    • Volunteered in the past year
    • Elevator trained

Weekday Household Good Sorting

On various days throughout the week, volunteers sort through and organize donated household goods. This varies from checking if appliances work to packing dishes into kits. Learn more below.

  • Sorting Team Leader

    Prepare for and lead volunteers in various sorting tasks:

    • Sorting out broken or unacceptable household goods,
    • Checking appliances and lamps
    • Organizing household good kit "raw materials"
    • Making dish, linen, and kitchen starter kits

     
    Other responsibilities:
     
    • Following opening and closing procedures
    • Ensure volunteers sign in and out
    • Communicate with Volunteer Coordinator regarding any pertinent issues

     
    Requirements:
     
    • At least 18 years old
    • Preapproved by Volunteer Coordinator
  • Sorters

    Under the guidance of a Team Leader, volunteers :

    • Sort out broken or unacceptable household goods,
    • Check appliances and lamps
    • Organize household good kit "raw materials"
    • Make dish, linen, and kitchen starter kits

    Other responsibilities:
     
    • Follow opening and closing procedures
    • Ensure volunteers sign in and out
    • Communicate with Volunteer Coordinator regarding any pertinent issues

Serving Clients

All volunteer work at New Life is ultimately in service to our clients, but a few roles are more direct. Read more below.

  • Client Hosts

    This process is currently done virtually for everyone's safety. Volunteers and clients call into a conference line and make selections on a virtual store.

    Volunteers guide clients through furniture and household good selection after reviewing:

    • Home layout, size, and access
    • Specific needs based on household members
    • Furniture guidelines
