Household Goods Sorter #
Whether you’re an organization connoisseur or just enjoy working with your hands without having to lift anything heavy, sorting is the right fit for you. Organize household goods for people transitioning from homelessness by sorting donations, packing starter kits, making dish or glass sets, testing appliances or lamps, or inspecting linens under the direction of a Team Leader.
Requirements:
- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who also must sign up
Sorting Team Leader #
Lead and guide your fellow volunteers in organizing household goods for people transitioning from homelessness, including sorting donations, packing kitchen, dish, or linen kits, testing appliances or lamps, or cleaning the sorting area. You will be responsible for opening and closing procedures, ensuring everyone checks in and out, and guiding new and returning volunteers.

- Trained as a Team Leader
Inventory Team Leader #
Are you a problem solver with a working knowledge of our inventory procedures? Lead and guide your fellow volunteers in inspecting, cleaning, inventorying, and moving furniture. You will be responsible for opening and closing procedures, ensuring everyone checks in and out, and guiding new and returning volunteers.
Requirements:
- Open to 18+
- Trained as a Team Leader
Drop-off Greeter #
Build your customer service skills as the first person people meet when dropping off furniture and household goods or picking up their furniture! As vehicles arrive, hand out tax receipts if requested and direct the flow of traffic.
Requirements:
- Ages 14+ | 14-15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who also must sign up
Duty Officer #
Duty Officers oversee the drop-off shift, identify tasks for the day, and partner with Team Leaders to solve problems. This is a great leadership opportunity for experienced volunteers.
Requirements:
- Open to 18+
- Elevator trained
- Trained as a Duty Officer
Furniture Mover #
Work out your arms and do good for the community at the same time. This shift can vary in task! Furniture Movers help receive donations, move furniture into our showroom for clients to choose, or even gather client orders.
Requirements:
- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year old volunteers must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who also must sign up
- Ability to comfortably lift 50lbs i.e. Can you lift one end of a desk onto a cart?
Core Furniture Mover #
Work out your arms and do good for the community at the same time. As vehicles arrive for drop-off, inspect donations, and unload and move furniture. Furniture Movers also help fill the showroom so that it is ready for clients on Monday.
Requirements:
- Experience volunteering at New Life
- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year old volunteers must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who also must sign up
- Ability to comfortably lift 50lbs i.e. Can you lift one end of a desk onto a cart?
Youth Volunteers (12-13) #
This is an opportunity for younger volunteers to be involved in our warehouse! Tasks will range from cleaning furniture to moving lighter weight items, depending on the comfort level of the volunteer.
Requirements:
- Open to 12-13 | 12-13 year old volunteers must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, who also must sign up
Elevator Operator/Furniture Mover #
Operate the elevator as needed throughout the drop-off shift, in addition to moving furniture. Please note we have a manual elevator, so only volunteers that have been previously trained on operation can perform this role.

Furniture Processor #
Every piece of furniture that is donated has to be checked and recorded as a vital part of our operation. Inspect, clean, and inventory furniture and help unload light-weight donations during drop-off.

- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year old volunteers must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
Loading Dock Team Leader #
Be a leader for one of our most exciting volunteer opportunities. As vehicles arrive for drop-off, monitor incoming donations and guide other volunteers on what we accept.
Requirements:
- Open to 18+
- Ability to comfortably lift 50lbs i.e. Can you lift one end of a desk onto a cart?
- Must be trained as a Team Leader by the Volunteer Coordinator
Order Gathering Furniture Mover #
This fast-paced shift involves teamwork and accuracy while carrying out the last step of serving clients: preparing the furniture to go home to families. Locate and gather clients’ furniture and household goods selections in our showroom to be picked up for delivery.
Requirements
- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
- Ability to comfortably lift 50lbs i.e. Can you lift one end of a desk onto a cart?
- (Recommended) Elevator trained
Order Gathering Team Leader #
Lead other volunteers in locating and gathering clients’ furniture and household goods selections. Move the orders to the loading dock for professional movers to pickup. You will be responsible for reviewing orders, closing procedures, ensuring everyone checks in and out, and guiding new and returning volunteers.
Requirements

- Trained as a Team Leader
- Ability to comfortably lift 50lbs i.e. Can you lift one end of a desk onto a cart?
Virtual Client Host #
Picking lamps, a table, dishes, and more when you’re starting out with little to nothing can be overwhelming. Client Hosts make the process easier for our clients. Guide clients through their furniture selection using a conference line and our online furniture bank store from the comfort of your own home. All Virtual Client Hosts are trained and have the opportunity to shadow other volunteers before starting. This is a weekly commitment.

Uploader #
Ever wonder how an online store works? Get behind the scenes as part of our virtual furniture bank uploading items to the online store to ensure sufficient inventory for clients. The New Life team will advise on which items to upload each week. This is a weekly commitment that requires training.

Evening Volunteers #
Are evenings better for your schedule? Join us after school or work. This shift will vary based on the needs of the organization, but can include everything from processing bed frames to cleaning furniture. Regardless of whether you’re comfortable moving furniture, we have something you can do.

- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
Truck Crew #
Hit the road with our drivers to pick up furniture from homes and businesses in the area! Pickups are essential to having enough furniture to offer clients. Don’t worry, our experienced staff and volunteer drivers will drive the truck.
Requirements:
- Open to 14+ | 14-15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
- Ability to comfortably lift 50lbs up and down stairs
- Anyone under 18 is required to follow in their own vehicle. Anyone 18 or older can ride in the truck if there’s room (seats 3).
- Please note we pick up beyond Walpole and Medfield, so you should be comfortable either carpooling with other volunteers or driving in unfamiliar areas. Click here for a full list of towns from where we pick up.
Painters & Repairers #
Please note this is a self-guided activity. There is no Team Leader. You choose your activity:
1) Repair and assemble furniture, both gently used and new. Some experience repairing, woodworking or reupholstering is strongly advised, though there’s no need to be an expert! Sometimes brand new furniture needs to be assembled too.
2) Grab your paintbrush! Paint furniture that’s surface needs a refresh to give to clients. Some experience painting furniture is recommended, but no need to be an expert!

Group Team Leader #
Group Team Leaders are well-versed in a variety of New Life activities, from processing bed frames to gathering orders! Group Team Leaders oversee volunteer groups from schools or companies, along with shifts that have more than one task.

Showroom Team Leader #
Our showroom is set up to accomodate both in-person and virtual client appointments, so ensuring the furniture is organized and put in the correct location is essential. Direct volunteers on where items that have been inspected and inventoried are stored.
