Criteria for Trashing an Item #
Will it cost more in materials or time to fix it than it’s worth? #
- Lumber, hardware, or intricate fixes come at a high cost
- Examples of not worth fixing:
- missing drawers
- missing legs or top
- complicated reupholstering
Will the repair hold or look okay? #
- Split legs or chair backs (i.e. anything that takes pressure) usually don’t last after repair
- Massive cracks are hard to hide even after being glued
Is it a high need item? #
- Items we get a lot of sometimes aren’t worth being fixed e.g. dining chairs
How to Trash an Item #
When an item is unsalvageable…
1. Remove working hardware and put away in repair supplies. #
- Knobs
- Handles
- Shelf pins
- Wheels
- Threaded feet i.e. feet that can be screwed in
- Other intact pieces
